Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I become an NJABA member?
To become a member of NJABA, fill out the NJABA Membership Form, include the appropriate payment and all supporting documentation, and mail to the address of the NJABA office (the current address is located on the membership form).

What membership status types are there? Which one is right for me?
There are 3 types of members: full, affiliate, and student. You should decide which status you fall under by reading the criteria for each status type below. You should then indicate your membership status on your application form.

What criteria determine a “Full Member”?
To be a full member, you need to be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst (BCABA), or possess a minimum of a Masters degree in psychology, behavior analysis, education, or a related discipline. Full members have professional commitments that include teaching, research, or practice in behavior analysis. Full members are eligible to vote in general elections and may run for and hold officer positions in NJABA.  Anyone not meeting the qualifications may petition for Full Member status by submitting all pertinent information concerning education, training, and experience to the NJABA Membership Committee.

What criteria determine an “Affiliate Member”?
Affiliate members include anyone interested in the discipline of behavior analysis, but who do not meet the requirements for Full Membership. Affiliate members enjoy all benefits of full membership except for the right to vote in general elections and the right to be an officer in NJABA. An affiliate member appointed to the Board as a consumer representative will be granted the right to vote on any matter that comes before the Board. All individuals interested in the science and practical application of ABA services are welcome to join as Affiliate Members.

What criteria determine a “Student Member”?
Any individual who is currently enrolled on a full-time basis in a graduate or undergraduate program and who has taken at least one course in Applied Behavior Analysis. A person applying for student membership must provide a copy of a transcript indicating their status in the graduate or undergraduate program. Student members may neither vote nor hold office in NJABA.

What benefits do I receive by joining NJABA?
The fees for conferences and workshops sponsored by NJABA are reduced for members. In addition, you gain access to our newsletter Current Dimensions along with other useful information and resources about behavior analysis in NJ. Your membership also helps to promote the advancement of behavior analysis in NJ and support the mission of NJABA, of course.

How long does my membership last?
Full and Affiliate members can join for either 1 or 3 years. Student members may only join for 1 year at a time.

What time period does the membership cover?
Yearly memberships run from July 1 until June 30 of the following year. Membership renewal notices are sent in May of the year a membership is expiring.

Is there any benefit to joining for 3 years as opposed to only 1?
Yes, the yearly membership fee is reduced when you join for 3 years instead of 1.

Should I pay for my membership dues by check or credit card?
Either is fine. Please see the membership application form for details about what is required when paying by either check or credit card.

Once I am a member, how will I know when to renew my membership?
At the conclusion of your membership period (either 1 or 3 years), a reminder for renewal will be sent to you by NJABA sometime in May or June of your renewal year. You should renew as soon as possible to maintain your membership status.

What if I have any questions about membership in general or my membership status?
Email the NJABA Membership Committee Chair, Sharon Reeve, or Ken Reeve, another member of the Membership Committee at membership@njaba.org. We'll be happy to help you.
